Most linear electric fireplaces on Amazon are sold as "recessed and wall mounted". The unit is the same, the install is not.
Wall-mounted
The fireplace hangs on a bracket on the wall, like a TV. It sticks out by its full depth, often 3.5 to 5.5 in.
- One afternoon of work, a stud finder and a drill.
- The power cord runs down the wall to an outlet. Hide it with a cord cover or have an outlet put in behind the unit.
- Easy to take with you when you move.
Recessed
The fireplace sits inside the wall, flush or nearly flush with the drywall.
- You cut the drywall and frame an opening. Units under about 4 in deep fit a standard 2x4 wall, deeper units need a built-out wall.
- Check the manual for the clearance to wood studs and to the TV above.
- Looks built-in, which is the whole point. More work and harder to undo.
Which to choose
Rent, or want it done today: wall-mounted. Own, and want it to look like part of the house: recessed. Either way, check the depth in our spec tables before you buy.
